The Local Democracy Bill currently being debated in the House of Lords will soon force Local Authorities to rethink the ways in which they involve the public in their decision making processes.

To help Councils better understand the options and technology available to them, A Recipe for Success will be offering a Free eParticipation and Democracy Workshop. During this event, attendees will be introduced to various online tools and shown how they can use them to better interact with the communities they serve.

ePetitioning
Presented by Fraser Henderson, ParticiTech

During this presentation, Fraser will present a short history of ePetitioning and give an overview of Bristol City Council’s system, including lessons learned etc. He will then look at the policy components of the new local democracy bill and talk about the new EuroPetition project.

Webcasting Committee Meetings
Presented by Hull City Council and South Holland District Council

Hull City Council and South Holland District Council will share their experience with webcasting committee meetings. They will discuss what impact putting their meetings onto the web has had on members of the public, Councillors and their own service area.

Engaging the Public Using Online Social Networking Sites
Presented by Lashelle Reed, A Recipe for Success

During this session, Lashelle will discuss the growing usage of online social networking sites and how the Public Sector can tap into them to better engage the public. She will go over the various options available (including Twitter, Blog in a Box, Facebook/MySpace/Flickr and SecondLife) and show examples of how some government bodies are already using them.

Case Study – Moving To A Web Based Committee Management System
Presented by Steve Swain and Charlie Powell, City of Lincoln Council

The City of Lincoln Council has spent the last 2 years developing and moving Democratic Services to a web based committee management system. Steve and Charlie will briefly discuss the impact this system has had on their service area and answer any questions from Councils considering embarking upon a similar project.
