The Challenge

Like all Local Authorities, the City of Lincoln Council has a wide range of services they offer to the public. They wanted a website that would not only make it easier for their customers to find out about these services, but also make the most of the investment that had been made e-enabling them.

There were a number of things the Council didn’t like about their existing website. For instance, they felt the A-Z of services didn’t always link through to the appropriate information and was often out of date. They frequently received comments from the public, and even staff, saying they found it difficult to find what they were looking for. In addition, the contacts and links put into information pages were often incorrect or broken.

The Solution Delivered

Updated Content Management System

A Recipe for Success upgraded their eKIS content management system to meet the City of Lincoln Council’s requirements. They changed the system so that contacts, documents, related links, frequently asked questions and online services were held centrally within the admin system and could be linked to related web pages via keywords. By doing this, any changes made to these elements only had to be done once, and would then be automatically updated throughout the site – including within the A-Z of services.

Updated Design Focusing on Customer Requirements

To make it easier for users to locate the information that was relevant to them, the website was split into five sections – Residents, Businesses, Visitors, Media and Online Services. The Homepage was also changed to allow the City of Lincoln Council complete control over its look and feel. This meant that the latest events, news, or services could always be prominently featured on the homepage and updated at the click of a button.

Management Reporting to Help Keep Information Up to Date

By introducing management reports, the Council’s Web Coordinator could quickly generate reports by service area which highlighted those web pages due for review. This, in turn, helped to keep managers up-to-date with what pages they had on the website and allowed them to better plan the maintenance of these pages with their staff.
